Hi Dnt,
In my opinion its all about content. While a nice design is great, you can have a white page with no design at all and it will still be great if it has great content. Interesting things to read, stuff to do, unique things that make it fun to browse. An updates area is also good because you can show off your new features and it gives people something to come back for to check.
